Ms Michѐla Jantjies

Research Intern

I'm a scholar and advocate for open discourse, fueled by a deep commitment to social justice. My academic journey began at Nelson Mandela University, where I earned both my Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Political Studies and a BA Honours in Philosophy. Currently, I'm delving deeper into the world of thought as an MA Philosophy student at the same institution. But learning isn't confined to the classroom for me – I share my love of philosophy with first-year students, teaching courses like Introduction to Philosophical Questioning and Introduction to Philosophical Arguments. In 2023, I joined the Centre for Philosophy in Africa as a research intern. My research focuses on how wokeism and cancel culture is implicated in censorship on social media and public administration. My Master’s thesis focuses particularly on the oppositional dynamics between cancel culture and human rights. Overall, I am interested in the utility of critical thinking as a weapon against digital dogmatism and cancel culture and a world where social media platforms become arenas for genuine discourse, not echo chambers of enforced conformity.
