About the Centre

The Centre for Philosophy in Africa (CfPA) was established and launched as a virtual centre in 2019 with Dr Mutinda Nzioki as acting Director. In launching the Centre, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Sibongile Muthwa, located the centre within the Revitalisation of the Humanities, stating that it forms part of “bigger drive to connect the institution’s diverse and multidisciplinary academic community to a “Mandela consciousness” truly deserving of the University’s name”.

The Center is an entity of the university whose mission is aligned with the Vision 2030 of the University. Through its activities, the Center contributes to the university’s project of revitalising the humanities as a way to integrate various disciplinary approaches to knowledge creation. The goal is to ensure “co-creation of Africa-purposed solutions” as outlined in the Vision 2030 strategy of Nelson Mandela University.

In 2020, the Centre began its programming by co-organising a seminar series under the concept of the Africa and Knowledge. In 2023, the Centre appointed a Special Professor in Prospective African Futures to provide Academic leadership from the basis of the discipline of philosophy, advance engagement, support transformation, produce research output as part of “the faculty’s strategy to revitalize the Humanities and reignite their catalytic role in the academy.”
